1st
& 2nd Century Skeptics Of
Christianity
Admit Jesus Was Real
One may be
confused by the headline, but it is true. Consider in A.D.
115 a Roman skeptic named Tacitus clearly unsympathetic to
Christianity stated:
“Nero
fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures
of a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by
the populace. Christus [Christ] ,from whom the name had its
origin suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of
Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontus
Pilate… " Tacitus, Annals
15.44.
Furthermore, a
Jewish skeptic and Pharisee named Josephus also said:
“About this time
there lived Jesus…when Pilate upon hearing Him,
accused by men of the highest standing among us [Pharisees],
had condemned him to be crucified, those who had in the first
place come to love him did not give up their affection for
him…
Josephus,Antiquities18.63-64
Josephus wrote
this in his historical book, which is dated at being
completed in about A.D. 93.
Today there are
skeptics of a different sort. Some say Jesus never lived
& some say Jesus never died. We need to be careful to
weigh the good historical evidence in light of the Bible. The
Bible does not contradict itself and teaches Jesus lived,
died, and arose (Mt.26-28).
And even if one
were just to look at the legitimate historians such as
Josephus and Tacitus, one can see that He was really walking
on earth in the 1st century.
If 1st & 2nd
Century people believed he was real, and centuries later
formed a calendar system after His death (B.C.-A.D), logic
must say we go to the source, and not the skeptic J.R.
