Jesus
Praises Her Attitude: Luke 21:1-4
“And
He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the
treasury, and He saw a certain poor widow putting in two
mites. So He said, “truly I say to you that this poor
widow has put in more than all’ for all these out of
their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of
her poverty put in all the livelihood she has.”
(Luke 21:1-4). What a role-model for us!
Here we see a
person who gave freely. But she gave more than money; she
gave her time and effort. She put in her
“livelihood” (Luke 21:4) thus
one can note her gift was given with the right attitude. This
giving was prior to the establishment of the Church—
for Christ had neither been buried, nor had he ascended
(Acts 1:1-10). Nevertheless, this
widow’s attitude is the same attitude we are to have
today.
When Christians
give to the Lord, “as they have prospered”
(1 Corinthians 16:2) it is a command. But
just as much as Christians are commanded to give, they are
also commanded to do so with the right attitude.
Note 5 Biblical
attitudes of Giving on the first day of the week.
1.) It is not to
be some sort of obligation that is done with a grudge-filled
attitude but it is to be done with a “cheerful”
attitude(2 Corinthians 9:5).
2.) Giving is to
be done with thinking and a prepared knowledge of the Gift,
for giving is to be done
“purpose-fully”(2 Corinthians
9:7).
3.) One is to
give in accordance to what one has been blessed with, God
does not say give a certain “X” percentage of
funds, He says give in proportion to one’s personal
financial ability (1 Corinthians16:2;2Corinthians
8:12-14).
4.) Giving is to
be done willingly(2 Corinthians 8:12).
5.) “On
the first day of the Week” (1Corinthians
16:2) tells us it is also to be done on Sundays.
Many
organizations guised under the auspices of the term
“religion” take up collections at every single
gathering, and do so, on any day of the week. This is simply
a pursuit of funds and not a pursuit of the divine
“first day of the week” only , Biblical pattern
(1 Corinthians16:1-2).
We all can be
happy to give a portion of what we have to the Lord. Because
we’re really not giving anything of our own, we are
just returning a small portion of our monetary blessings back
to the Lord, from whom every good and perfect blessing has
originated from. (James 1:17, 1 Cor.16, 1 Cor. 9,
Luke 21:1-4).
