SEEK
AND YE SHALL FIND
Matthew 7:7
“Hurry,
up, were going to be late!”— said the frantic,
yet loving wife.
“I’m trying dear,
but I just can’t find the keys!”— said
the frustrated, husband.
So many people,
the world over have heard conversations where the solution is
only to stop everything, and start searching.
In Matthew
chapter 7 Jesus says, “Ask, and it will be given you,
seek, and you will find, knock and it will be opened to
you” Mt.7:7.
This passage
could be applied to so many areas of life, from the physical,
to the emotional, and even to the political.
But let’s
look at this passage from the spiritual. When is the last
time you had a question about the Bible and your first
thought was, “I’ll just ask the
preacher.”
There is nothing,
sinful about asking for a Bible answer from someone who has
decided to “preach the word” with readiness
to… “reprove and exhort, with complete patience
and teaching…” 2 Tim.4:2.
But there is
something to be said for someone who says, “I’m
going to see just what the Bible says.”
An excellent
attitude also says, “Jesus said, ‘seek and ye
shall find’, And that means I aught to search the
Scriptures.”Mt.7:7 There are certain criteria one
aught to use when searching the scriptures.
One is look for
who the audience is. Always look to see who is the person
that is being spoken to. This often determines whether God is
approving something or condemning something.
Another, is to
consider the context. Very frequently an answer to a question
can be solved by reading the verses right before and after
the verse in question. Generally if one reads the whole
chapter the verse in question will often “solve
itself.”
Also, always look
for what the most simple explanation is, based on all the
scriptures that relate to a subject. Often people have some
convoluted theory, they try to construct, by neglecting to
look at every passage on the topic or subject.
Fourth,
don’t forget the details. Sometimes, one little word
in the Bible can change the entire way a thought, command, or
idea is conveyed.
And finally,
always make sure applications have God’s approval. If
we don’t find a place where God says we can do
something than the application criteria is always, remain
silent where God is silent.
Jesus says two
other things in Matthew 7:7 “ask and it will be given
to you” and “knock and it will be opened to
you.” If we pray, and ask God, to give us guidance in
our Bible study we will be using wisdom.
But in order to
do any seeking at all we must first “knock” at
the door. The only way the door of Biblical wisdom can be
opened is if we crack open the pages and begin seeking so we
may find.
